Seminar: Role of UN Sustainable Development Goals for Mitigating Environmental Issues

Department of Sustainable Environment in collaboration with Environment Protection Society organized a seminar under the theme “Role of UN Sustainable Development Goals for Mitigating Environmental Issues”. Barrister Anjum Jawaid Khan was the guest of honor. He has done LLM from McGill University of Canada, served as former Vice President Lahore High Court Bar Association, former counsel to President of Pakistan and two Army Chiefs, member of Law Conservation Union and Punjab Environmental council. Dean of Faculty of Management Studies, Dr. Faisal Mustafa, Director Department of Sustainable Environment, Ms. Javaria Qais Joiya and Professor Dr. Qais Aslam from Faculty of Management Studies also attended this seminar.

Speaking on environmental issues, Barrister Anjum Jawaid told about the United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals, why these goals were formulated and what is the importance of UNSDG’s that includes; no poverty, no hunger, good health, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, renewable energy, good jobs and economic growth, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace & justice and partnerships for these goals. He explained agenda 2014 and focused on sustainable cities and communities, clean water and sanitation, renewable energy, climate action, good jobs and economic growth.

This seminar was quite informative, students showed their great interest while listening to the motivational lecture delivered by Barrister Anjum Jawaid Khan. At the end of the seminar Dean (FMS), Dr. Faisal Mustafa presented souvenir to the guest.

New Year’s Cake Cutting Ceremony

Department of Sustainable Environment greeted New Year, 2019 by organizing a cake cutting ceremony under the theme of “Green Sustainable New Year 2019”. Pro-Rector UCP, Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah along with Dr. Faisal Mustafa, Dean of Faculty of Management Studies, Dr. Shafiq Akhyar, Associate Dean of Administration, Dr. Fahmida Sultana, Dean, Faculty of Art and Social Sciences, Mr. Amjad Niaz, Director Administration and Ms. Javaria Qais Joiya, Director of Department of Sustainable Environment cut the cake and greeted 2019 as a Green Sustainable Year and pledged that DSE will attain United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to their maximum and make UCP Clean Green and Sustainable.

In her message, Ms. Javaria Qais Joiya called upon everyone to collectively dedicate themselves towards building Green and Sustainable Pakistan and contribute towards peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah hoped that year 2019 will bring joy, peace and prosperity to our country and to our beautiful mother planet Earth.

24 Hours of Reality

Protect Our Planet, Protect Ourself
Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) of University of Central Punjab (UCP) celebrated 24 hours of reality event in collaboration with The Climate Reality Project (TCRP) USA.

Vice President of United States Al Gore initiated Climate Reality Project to educate people around the world about climate change and its consequences. The special event, entitled *24 Hours of reality* was a part of this project that is designed to aware public about the scourge of anthropogenic global warming to anticipate its effects. This was a watch party that was broadcasted throughout the world and it was hosted by Al Gore, they traveled around the Earth in *24 hours* to learn more about environmental issues and climate change causing health risks and affecting the wellness of families and communities around the globe.

On 4th December, Director of Department of Sustainable Environment of University of Central Punjab, Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya/Climate Leader & Mentor has initiated 24 Hours of Reality’s Watch Partyevent in the University. Three climate leaders that are trained from United States Climate Reality Project, Ms. Amina Ali, Mr. HaroonAkram and Mr. Ali Zaib were the guest speakers, they talked about various climate issues and created awareness for the students of UCP about upcoming risks that are threatening the wellness of communities. Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya, Director Department of Sustainable Environment-UCP spoke about Al-Gore’s *The Climate Reality Project*, its work and*24-Hours of Reality*.

Save Earth There is No Planet B

Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) of University of Central Punjab (UCP) organized an event with the theme “Save Earth There is No Planet B”. Minister of States for Climate Change Ms. Zartaj Gul was the chief guest of the event.

Planet Earth is the only planet in the solar system where life exists. Mother Earth gave us life and saved us. But human activities are consequently damaging planet Earth, there is a hole in the ozone layer, Greenland and ice caps of Antarctica are melting, sea level is rising, various climate change problems are hovering, most important is global warming. It is not a hoax, life on Earth is really in danger and so our lives. It is the time to step forward and to stand against the environmental challenges.

University of Central Punjab has established the Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) that works to achieve *sustainable development goals*. DSE has initiated various events in context with Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Pakistan Movement. This event was the part of the series that has been celebrated to spread awareness among youth to take step towards Environment Protection for us and for our future generations.

On 8th December at 11:00 am, Minister of State for Climate Change, Ms. ZartajGul arrived at University of Central Punjab. Dr.Muhammad Zafarullah, Pro-Rector UCP and Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya, Director Department of Sustainable Environment-UCP welcomed the guests warmly with great privilege. The event started with opening ceremony by unleashing balloons in the air then State Minister, Ms. ZartajGul planted tree at main courtyard Building B of UCP, after that honorable guest along with Pro-Rector Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah, Dean of Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Dr. Faisal Mustafa and Director Department of Sustainable Environment, Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya moved towards auditorium where the event was held. All deans, faculty members and students warmly welcomed the chief guest. The event was hosted by coordinator – DSE, Ms. Fatima Azam. The event began with the recitation of Holy Quran and by playing the national anthem. Afterward, Ms.Javaria Qais Joiya, Director Department of Sustainable Environment, Climate Leader/Mentor delivered welcome speech. In the speech, she flashed light on all the activities that DSE has conducted towards making campus clean, green and sustainable in context with Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Pakistan Movement and presented some glimpses of her visits to International Climate Conferences where she presented University of Central Punjab as a Climate Leader/Mentor. Later, Minister of State for Climate Change Ms. ZartajGuldelivered uplifting speech and motivated students to work on saving our natural resources and protecting the environment. Then Pro-Rector UCP, Dr. Muhammad Zafraullah addressed the gathering and thankedMsZartajGul for her presence at the University of Central Punjab. At the end of the event, souvenirs were distributed. Pro-Rector, Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah presented souvenir to Ms. ZartajGul then Dean of FMS,Dr. Faisal Mustafa and Director Department of Sustainable Environment, Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya presented souvenir to Ms. ZartajGul and her three personal assistants.

At the end of the event, chief guest Ms. ZartajGul and her personal assistants, Dr. Faisal Mustafa and Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya had tea with Pro-Rector UCP, Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah at his office.

Department of Sustainable Environment of University of Central Punjab is seriously concerned about the destructive actions of humans that brought mother Earth in danger. Let we make good relationship with Earth and use natural resources wisely because there is no other planet where we can go if Earth would be completely destroyed.

Unknown Pakistan

Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) of University of Central Punjab (UCP) has organized a one-day seminar on “Unknown Pakistan”. Salman Rashid was the guest speaker for the seminar.

Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) of University of Central Punjab in collaboration with Environment Protection Society of UCP is working on various projects regarding sustainability and environment protection. DSE is struggling to its best to make our campus clean, green and sustainable.

On 6th December at 3:00 pm DSE held a seminar on *Unknown Pakistan*. Mr. Salman Rashid was the guest speaker who is a famous environmentalist, travel writer, photo-journalist and fellow of Royal Geographical Society. He is the only Pakistani who has seen the north face of K-2 and trekked in the shadow of this great mountain. He talked about the unrevealed facts about Pakistan. He presented his travel experiences and created awareness about the archeological heritage of Pakistan and its importance. Director Department of Sustainable Environment, Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya, Professor Dr. QaisAslam, Ms. Faiza Akhtar and coordinator of the event Ms. Fatima Azam welcomed the guest warmly. After the seminar, Mr. Salman, Director of DSE, Ms. JavariaQaisJoiya and Professor Dr.QaisAslamhad tea with Dean of Faculty of Management Studies, Dr. Faisal Mustafa.
This seminar was organized to flashlight the importance of our homeland and to bring awareness for the things from which people are unaware.

Plantation Drive and Environment Protection Walk

On Thursday, 22nd November, Department of Sustainable Environment and Environment Protection Society of UCP conducted Plantation Drive inside the campus and inaugurated this ceremony by unleashing balloons in the air.

Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah Pro-Rector, initiated this drive by planting a tree. Later on Dr. Faisal Mustafa Dean FMS, Dr. Shafiq Akhyar Associate Dean Administration, Mr. Chaudhary Bashir Director Academic, Mr. Amjad Niaz Director Administration, Mr. Usman Mansoor Director Infrastructure, Mrs Javeria Qais Joiya Director Sustainable Environment and the students of university planted numerous trees at main courtyard building B of UCP. The purpose of this drive was to encourage students and staff to fight against climate change.

After the ceremony Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah Pro-Rector, deans and directors along with the students walked through the campus for clean and green university.

Model’s Display

Department of Sustainable Environment (DSE) and Environment Protection Society (EPS) of UCP arranged Sustainability event with theme “Clean and Green Campus” on 20th November, 2018.
Students of UCP displayed models related to various environmental problems and presented the solutions toward these problems in their demonstrations. Representatives illustrated their ideas based on plastic, water conservation, carbon emission and renewable energy. The most focused area of the event was renewable energy as the University of Central Punjab (UCP) is the only education network that has the largest Solar Power Plant. Students displayed models of wind energy and provided details of the feasibility where this plant works efficiently in Pakistan.
The work of students’ was astonishing and inspiring. People showed great interest towards these projects and were observing them keenly.

Inauguration Ceremony of Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Pakistan Movement and Sustainability Week 2018

Department of Sustainable Environment and Environment Protection Society of University of Central Punjab inaugurated Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Pakistan movement and conducted an opening ceremony of Sustainability week 2018.

Dr. Muhammad Zafarullah, Pro-Rector UCP inaugurated the ceremony by cutting the ribbon and presented his valuable insights about this initiative taken by Department of Sustainable Environment towards “Green Campus”. Dean of Faculty of Management Studies Dr. Faisal Mustafa, Director Academic Chaudhary Bashir, Director Administration Mr. Amjad Niaz, Director Infrastructure Mr. Usman Mansoor, Ms. Samina Hafeez, Senior Manager Careers Services Office and Director Sustainable Environment Mrs. Javeria Qais Joiya were present at that moment.

Earth Hour

Pledge to Save Earth!

On Friday, 23rd November at 11:30am, enthusiastic students of UCP enlightened candles in front of Pro-Rector’s office to celebrate Earth Hour and sparked extraordinary action to stop the loss of nature. Dr. Zafaruallah, Pro-Rector and Mrs. Javeria Qais Joiya, Director Sustainability along with students started this light-off event by enlightening candles and turning off electric lights. They all took pledge to save our home planet Earth and protect natural resources.
